*UPDATED: July 14, 2009 – The “unofficial” RTM build 7600 leaked yesterday and I jumped on that stuff. I installed it from a 8GB flash drive, and everything went perfectly. When you get to the part where it asks for a serial number, just click next to complete installation without a serial. If you want to crack the activation limit of 30 days, then you torrent freaks need to visit Demonoid for it. The activation patch will say Windows is activated without any time limit. As for the Asus apps for the G50, they all work the same as other Win7 RC builds before this one.*
Since the Release Candidate (RC1) for Windows 7 was made public, I figured I’d test it myself on my Asus G50V. The build I tested was RC 7100.
The install was quick, much faster than the days of the 1-hour XP installation. When it was finished, it booted to the desktop with high speed. The first thing I had to do was see which drivers it didn’t install automatically. This is where I was surprised the most.
Looking at the Device Manager (Right-click on Computer, choose Manage, on left side of new window go to Device Manager), all I found was 7 missing drivers. Those missing were the Ricoh Memory Card drivers, ITE Infrared Receiver, nVidia High Def Audio, and of course the video card (nVidia GeForce 9700m GT).
Microsoft caused my jaw to drop at the discovery of my Wireless Card (Atheros AR 928x), even though the card is quite common. After the install finished, I was asked if I wanted to join my wireless network. No other Windows version did THAT! About time.
Here are the drivers you will need to fill those empty spaces in your Device Manager that are filled with exclamation points.
*Note: The Vista drivers that came on your G50V Driver Disc work just fine, except for the video card.
1. Ricoh Memory Card Reader – 3.4 MB
2. ITE Infrared Receiver – 5.1 MB
3a. nVidia GeForce 9700m GT – x64 64-bit – 63.2 MB
3b. nVidia GeForce 9700m GT – x86 32-bit – 53.9 MB
*Note: The video card drivers will also install the nVidia High Def Audio drivers.
Leave a comment if you need help with getting these installed properly. If there are more drivers you need, see this post: Asus G50 Driver Files

Not me yet. So far, we have to wait for Asus to release their official Win 7 drivers. It shouldn’t be too long, as the RTM comes out very soon (officially…the bootleg is already out).

So, I saw one post referencing the hot keys above the keyboard, like the instant touchpad on/off, etc. I can’t get these to work, anybody have an idea?
Thanks.

I installed the lastest version of Direct Console you gave and still no luck for me. Im currently using Windows 7 as a secondary OS since I cudnt get the shortcut keys to work through Fn and the touchpad scroll. But I would like to remove vista and start using Windows 7 if only all the shortcuts and applications worked. And yes I am using the x64 RC 7100 build.

I did a fresh install on my G50V with RC (build 7100) and it is running fantastic. Thanks for the info on Win 7 Manager as I am now able to get my keyboard function keys working.
If only the dashboard keys worked…that would be even better.

My keyboard functionality is great. All of my hotkeys work fine, such as volume control and screen dimming via Fn key. The other lighted blue keys on the dashboard do not work for me, except ExpressGate from the off state.
Experiencing Windows 7 up to this point will never have me wanting to revert to Vista again. From my laptop Windows 7 is faster, more efficient, less power hungry, and more fun to use than Vista.

I attempted the install with the 7000 build I believe and managed to get the drivers installed from the disc, but I found most of the apps and keyboard functionality did not work.
I see you mention updating the Manufacturer and Model which I will try on my next attempt, but once you did that did the keyboard function keys and hot keys beside the power button work?
I reverted back to the original Vista x64 because I lost too much functionality when I went to Vista, but I did notice Vista was zippier

Are you using the most recent version of Direct Console? I have it working on my Win7 RC 7100.
If you’re not sure, then download it HERE. Then uninstall the one you have now, and install the one you downloaded.

Iv installed Direct Console. It installed normally and I dint get any errors, its even running in the task manager but it has a “*32″ written next to it.
But I cant find it in the taskbar. I know its running and installed but Im not able 2 use it or anything.

Here’s what I did in reference to Direct Console and Smart Logon…
You need to change the System Information, specifically the Manufacturer and Model of your laptop. I did this with a program called Win 7 Manager. Win 7 Manager is free as of now as it’s a Beta. With it, you can change the necessary System Info. When in Win 7 Manager, go to ‘Customization’, ‘Customize System’, then ‘Other Setting’. Here, you have to make Manufacturer “AsusTek Computer Inc.” and Model should be “G50V”.
Now you can install those programs without a hitch. The install files look to that information to make sure it’s an Asus laptop.
Let me know if you need more help or run into problems.

After reading this post I installed Windows 7 on my G50V ‘n evrything is working well, all the drivers were installed automatically.
But I just wanted to ask about the software’s, like direct console and smart log on. I use them everyday so is it possible to install them on Windows 7 or do I need a different version of the, made specially for Windows 7?
